Zespół badaczy z wielu ośrodków naukowych pod przewodnictwem naukowców z University of Pittsburgh otrzymał 22 miliony dolarów dotacji na opracowanie urządzenia,  które dzięki połączeniu sztucznej inteligencji, bioelektroniki i medycyny regeneracyjnej będzie zdolne do regenerowania tkanki mięśniowej, szczególnie po urazach wojennych.

Celem projektu jest stworzenie urządzenia, które będzie można umieścić wewnątrz uszkodzonego mięśnia. Ma ono wpływać na środowisko rozległej rany, by stymulować proces gojenia podobny do takiego, jaki zachodzi w mniejszych, mniej poważnych ranach. Efektem, który autorzy projektu chcą osiągnąć, jest uzyskanie pełnej regeneracji tkanki, bez upośledzenia funkcji mięśnia i zbliznowacenia. Fundatorem grantu jest organizacja Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

Sztuczna inteligencja nadzoruje gojenie

Urządzenie ma monitorować sygnały molekularne na każdym etapie gojenia, począwszy od pierwszych godzin po urazie, aż po kolejne tygodnie. Jego zadaniem będzie dostarczanie odpowiednich molekuł do środowiska rany, tak aby stymulować i kontrolować zachodzące w niej procesy. Nadzorowany i pobudzany w ten sposób proces gojenia ma doprowadzić do pełnej regeneracji tkanki mięśniowej. Nad jego przebiegiem mają czuwać algorytmy sztucznej inteligencji.

Urządzenie to ma pomóc w leczeniu żołnierzy, u których doszło do rozległych urazów mięśni. Jeżeli uszkodzeniu uległo więcej niż 20 proc. powierzchni mięśnia, tkanka nie jest zdolna do pełnej regeneracji. W miejscu urazu powstaje sztywna blizna, co często staje się przyczyną znacznego upośledzenia funkcji zranionej kończyny. Jak wskazuje przewodzący badaniom prof. Stephen Badylak z University of Pittsburgh, celem projektu jest stworzenie możliwości leczenia w tych przypadkach, w których dotąd medycyna była bezradna.

Konieczna współpraca

W projekcie, który ma potrwać cztery lata biorą udział naukowcy z Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University, Rice University, University of Vermont oraz University of Wisconsin.

Pierwsze dwa lata projektu zostaną poświęcone na opracowanie prototypu urządzenia. W ciągu kolejnych dwóch lat naukowcy zaangażowani w projekt nawiążą bliską współpracę z chirurgami z Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, którzy zajmują się leczeniem pacjentów ze znacznymi urazowymi ubytkami tkanki mięśniowej. Celem tej kooperacji będzie uzgodnienie, jakie parametry powinno mieć projektowane urządzenie, by jak najlepiej sprawdziło się w praktyce terapeutycznej w klinice.

Naukowcy będą także musieli nawiązać bliską współpracę z Agencją Żywności i Leków (Food And Drug Administration Agency, FDA). Stephen Badylak tłumaczy, że nawiązanie dialogu z organizacjami rządowymi jest konieczne, aby już na wczesnym etapie rozwoju projektu ustalić wymagania prawne i przemysłowe. Pozwoli to na szybsze wprowadzenie urządzenia do praktyki klinicznej, co jest głównym celem autorów projektu.
