Narzędzie opracowane przez naukowców z NTU składa się z dwóch elementów: klejącego płata zawierającego Voltaglue oraz zmodyfikowanego, elastycznego cewnika balonowego z wysuwanymi przewodami elektrycznymi.

Cewnik jest umieszczany w naczyniu krwionośnym i transportowany do miejsca urazu. Następnie balon cewnika, do którego przytwierdzony jest płat Voltaglue, powiększa się, tak by klej pokrył całą powierzchnię urazu. Płat kleju jest następnie aktywowany za pomocą impulsu elektrycznego. Twardość kleju zmienia się w zależności od aplikowanego napięcia elektrycznego, dzięki czemu Voltaglue może być stosowany na różne rodzaje naczyń krwionośnych. Utwardzanie kleju zajmuje od 3 do 5 minut. Po zakończeniu procesu przewody i cewnik są usuwane z naczynia krwionośnego. Procedura nie wymaga wykonania ani jednego cięcia chirurgicznego.

Urządzenie może być stosowane w naczyniach o przekroju od 7,5 do 30 mm. Klej Voltaglue jest wykonany z substancji o właściwościach bioresorbowalnych, co oznacza, że całkowicie rozpuszcza się on w przeciągu kilku tygodni od aplikacji.

Nieinwazyjna metoda leczenia przetok

Jak mówi prof. Terry Steele z Nanyang Technological University, który kierował projektem, opracowana przez jego zespół technologia może stworzyć nową, nieinwazyjną opcję terapeutyczną w leczeniu przetok tętniczo-żylnych oraz przecieków naczyniowych. Ekspert tłumaczy, że dzięki zastosowaniu specjalnego cewnika i kleju Voltaglue można skutecznie naprawić uraz od wewnątrz, bez konieczności wykonywania operacji.

Narzędzie Voltaglue może również znaleźć zastosowanie w przeszczepach naczyniowych oraz w leczeniu guzów. Autorzy projektu przewidują, że w przyszłości będzie ono mogło również być stosowane w leczeniu wad wrodzonych, takich jak ubytki w ścianie serca.
