2400 przypadków czerniaka rocznie
Pomimo tego, że zachorowalność na czerniaka w Polsce jest stosunkowo niska, choroba ta charakteryzuje się największą dynamiką wzrostu liczby zachorowań. W latach 1982-2002 liczba pacjentów z czerniakiem zwiększyła się blisko trzykrotnie. Nowotwór ten występuje najczęściej u osób w wieku ok. 50 r.ż.
Ryzyko zachorowania na czerniaka rośnie w przypadku intensywnego działania promieniowania ultrafioletowego naturalnego (promienie słoneczne) oraz sztucznego (promieniowanie w solarium). Ponadto wpływ na rozwój tego nowotworu ma również nieustanne drażnienie mechaniczne lub chemiczne, niska zawartość barwnika w skórze, a także predyspozycje genetyczne (m.in. rodzinny zespół znamion atypowych).
Należy pamiętać, iż szanse na wyleczenie czerniaka skóry będą zdecydowanie większe, dzięki wczesnej identyfikacji ogniska pierwotnego, jak również przerzutów do regionalnych węzłów chłonnych.
