O zakażeniu rany może świadczyć kilka objawów, m.in. zaczerwienienie rany, ból, pieczenie, uczucie pulsowania rany, obrzęk, ropna wydzielina, a także osłabienie, złe samopoczucie i gorączka. Manifestacją infekcji jest także wzrost temperatury w ranie.

Szwajcarscy naukowcy postanowili zaprojektować opatrunek tak, by był w stanie odczytywać temperaturę rany. Gdy utrzymuje się ona w zakresie 32-34 stopni Celsjusza środki antybakteryjne pozostają w strukturach opatrunku. Jeżeli dojdzie natomiast do wzrostu temperatury rany – do co najmniej 37 stopni Celsjusza – materiał opatrunkowy ulega zmiękczeniu i uwalnia do rany oktenidynę. Spadek temperatury rany do pożądanego poziomu powoduje, że polimer w opatrunku twardnieje, zamykając w swych strukturach środek przeciwbakteryjny.
