Na podstawie szczegółowego wywiadu oraz badania wziernikowego części ustnej gardła specjalista jest w stanie określić obecność ciała obcego w gardle. W tym celu wykorzystuje się również lusterko krtaniowe.
Z uwagi na to, że m.in. ości trudno dostrzec na tle błony śluzowej, niezwykle ważne jest, aby szczegółowo sprawdzić pod tym kątem migdałki, nasadę języka i zachyłki gruszkowate.

Niewielka rana, która powstaje podczas wbicia się ości w błonę śluzową gardła, migdałki czy język nie wymaga zaopatrzenia chirurgicznego, z uwagi na to, że obejmuje najczęściej tylko powierzchowne warstwy błony śluzowej. Dlatego wówczas należy wypłukać gardło wodą utlenioną w proporcji 1 łyżka 3% wody utlenionej na szklankę wody. Można również zastosować pędzlowanie gardła wodnym roztworem fioletu gencjanowego.
Konsultacja chirurgiczna z oceną wziernikową i chirurgicznym zaopatrzeniem rany jest niezbędna w przypadku większego krwawienia, skaleczenia większego niż 1 cm lub takiego, które penetruje w głąb.
