Sposoby leczenia peri-implantitis

Peri-implantitis dotyka około 1/4 pacjentów z wszczepionymi implantami stomatologicznymi. Przyczyną tych zaburzeń może być zbyt głębokie umiejscowienie implantu. Leczenie, w zależności od zaawansowania choroby, może być zachowawcze lub chirurgiczne. W pierwszym przypadku terapia polega na oczyszczeniu poddziąsłowej powierzchni implantów i wprowadzeniu odpowiednich nawyków higienizacyjnych. Z kolei leczenie chirurgiczne opiera się na mechanicznym oczyszczeniu powierzchni zakażonego implantu.

Algorytm przewidzi efekty leczenia

Obecnie nie ma wiarygodnego modelu oceny, który wskazywałby, jak pacjenci mogą zareagować na leczenie peri-implantitis. Dlatego naukowcy z University of Michigan School of Dentistry postanowili opracować algorytm uczenia maszynowego, formę sztucznej inteligencji, której zadaniem będzie przewidywanie efektów leczenia u poszczególnych pacjentów z peri-implantitis.

Algorytm nosi nazwę FARDEEP. W trakcie badań algorytm analizował próbki tkanek od grupy pacjentów z peri-implantitis, którym wszczepiono implant stomatologiczny. W każdej próbce określono ilość patogennych bakterii oraz komórek odpornościowych zwalczających infekcję. Tylko ci pacjenci, u których zanotowano większą liczbę komórek odpornościowych, wykazywali lepsze wyniki w zwalczaniu choroby.

– Pacjenci z niskim ryzykiem chorób przyzębia wykazywali wyższy poziom komórek odpornościowych, które doskonale radziły sobie z infekcjami bakteryjnymi – mówi prof. stomatologii i autor badań Yu Leo Lei.

Kosztowna leczenie i nieznane efekty

Zdaniem naukowców leczenie chirurgiczne może zmniejszyć rozległość zakażenia. Terapia regeneracyjna jest jednak kosztowna, a jej wyniki są nieprzewidywalne. Dlatego technologia AI może wspomóc określanie prawdopodobnego przebiegu leczenia. Zdaniem naukowców z University of Michigan w przyszłości za pomocą FARDEEP możliwe będzie także przewidywanie ryzyka wystąpienia peri-implantitis przed samym wszczepieniem implantów.
